Why was Allegany County Cancer Services Formed?
Founder Lori Ballengee was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41 in 2005. During her year of treatment, she saw many people struggling with how to pay their bills and get to treatments. She also watched many people sit for hours by themselves during their treatments. Lori was blessed with a very understanding employer, excellent health insurance, a devoted husband and loving family and friends. She knew when she got well, she needed to do something to give back to those not as fortunate as she was.
Lori formed Allegany County Cancer Services in May of 2006. She found a small group of people as passionate about the cause as she was and they comprised her first Board of Directors. The Board took almost a year to decide what services they wanted to provide, write policies and procedures and do some fundraising for start-up funds. The first client was served in March of 2007 with $200. Allegany County Cancer Services became a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization in 2007 and also incorporated around that time as well. Since our beginning, the award amounts have increased to the present day $500.
Since 2007, Allegany County Cancer Services has assisted 753 residents of Allegany County, New York with cancer diagnosis related expenses with over $339,816.25.
